My name is Jasmine Fogwell and I am a children’s author living in Edmonton. I have written four children’s books. Three of them are a middle-grade trilogy, aimed at age’s eight to ten years old and the other is a picture book that children age’s four to eight would enjoy hearing. I offer a variety of presentations options that can be tailored to fit with what your school might want.

Middle-grade fiction presentation – designed for grade 3 – 5
This presentation can be tailored to speak to individual classes or multiple classes at the same time.  I begin this presentation with an introduction to myself, and The Fidori Trilogy, the middle-grade fiction series I have written. I talk about where the ideas for the story, the characters and the setting came from. I also speak about how I wrote the story and the process that went into editing it, and eventually publishing the series. I try to emphasize the constant learning that comes with being an author, the hard work it takes to write and publish a book, and the team of people involved in bringing a story from idea to published book. I will also read a chapter of the first book in the series to the class and then answer any questions they may have. My hope in presenting to classes is that it will inspire them in their creative endeavors and teach them what it is like to be an author. The presentation takes around thirty minutes.

Picture book presentation – designed for grade K – 3
This presentation can be tailored to speak to individual classes or multiple classes at the same time. My hope in this presentation is to foster a love of stories in the children. I will talk about my picture book, The Frizz. I briefly speak about the job of the author and the illustrator in books and also a little about where the idea came from for The Frizz. The main portion of the presentation is reading the story to the children and answering their questions about the book.
There are a few different ways I have found works well for presenting this book to classes. One is going around to some of the different classes in the school and popping in for about fifteen to twenty minutes and reading the book with the class. This gives more children a chance to meet the author and ask questions they may have about the book or being an author.
The other way I have presented this book is to entire divisions in a gym setting. This way usually involves reading the book off a screen up front so the children can all see the pictures from the story. With this style of presentation I also have some giant props for some children to hold up during the reading. So there is some fun interaction with the story in this way with a bigger group.

Chatting with students interested in writing – designed for grade 6 – 9
Do you have students that are interested in writing? This is a great opportunity for them to chat with an author about anything writing. I find it works well if a small space can be provided for the students to meet with me. I am happy to share my experiences of becoming a writer and have a discussion about any questions they have. I enjoy hearing about young people writing and am amazed at some of the writing these young people are doing. This is a great ad-on to any school visit to help foster a love of storytelling. It usually takes between fifteen to twenty minutes.

Currently there is no cost for these presentations within the Edmonton area. Please see contact page to ask about a presentation at your school.
